Specialist education provision - transport needs

Proposal

We are seeking the views of parents and carers of children with a Statement of Educational Need in relation to the transport services they use.  Your thoughts on the following will help us to deliver better services.

Transport services, including the travel we organise for young people with special educational needs, is currently undergoing redesign.

We have a number of opportunities to do things differently and better for SEN children requiring transport. These include developing an emphasis on the provision of local services in the redesign of our Children’s services, meaning that young people shouldn’t have to travel as far to get the help or support they need; the personalisation of budgets, allowing greater choice and flexibility in how transport is organised; the SEND reforms and the introduction of Education Healthcare Plans, creating a catalyst for change; and investing in independent travel training.

No changes will be made to current transport arrangements for any child or young person with SEN due to this redesign process, without their family being notified and a transition process agreed.

We have created a short survey to start to gather feedback from children, parents and carers about how transport services are working for them at the moment. If you have any comments and thoughts please do share them with us.

How to get involved

Please take a few minutes to tell us about your travel arrangements for your child if they have a statement of specialist educational need.

We will also be coming to talk – and more importantly, listen – to parents at PACC events, through the Parent Partnership and at Severndale School, where we will talk to the school’s governors about our aspirations as well meeting with parents. We will be able to keep parents updated with progress through these channels and very much appreciate the support we are being offered to do this.
