Whitchurch Swimming and Fitness Centre - public consultation

Proposal

Shropshire Council announced the permanent closure of Whitchurch Swimming Centre in June 2021 following the discovery of extensive structural issues that were identified during the closure of the facility due to coronavirus. It's now a priority of Shropshire Council to provide a new facility for the community in Whitchurch with a projected opening in Autumn 2025.

Business case modelling and a facility mix study have been undertaken as part of a detailed feasibility study to provide a replacement facility in Whitchurch that will have the following core aims:

1. Improve the health and wellbeing of Whitchurch residents through more physical activity/sport
2. Invest in a high-quality leisure facility in the town centre which provides accessible and inclusive activities for all
3. Engage people who may not traditionally engage in leisure activities and physical activity
4. Be operationally sustainable and environmentally sustainable with carbon neutral targets, and encourage users to adopt ‘active travel' - cycling and walking

Shropshire Council's cabinet on 27 April 2022 resolved:

To agree that the proposed plans be the subject of a formal public consultation exercise and that a further report be brought to cabinet following completion of the consultation.
